Consulting

The hard part is not finding the problem. It is fixing it.

ProfitEdge consulting is hands-on advisory work on the things that decide whether an independent retailer makes money — pricing and margin, inventory, operating performance, and the decisions taken on the back of them. Independent, vendor-neutral, and worked through with your team rather than handed over as a report.

Where we help

Profit does not leak in one place

Four areas of the business, each with its own problems underneath. Most businesses arrive with a problem in one of them and find the cause sitting in another — which is the main argument for not hiring four specialists.

Revenue

What you sell, who buys it, and whether they come back. Not marketing execution — the operational read on which customers and categories are actually worth pursuing.

Sales process and conversion  ·  Customer retention and lifetime value
Demand and stocking signals  ·  Cross-sell opportunity

Operations

What you carry, and how work moves through the building. Where cash gets tied up and capacity disappears without either one ever showing on a report.

Inventory accuracy and stock health  ·  Pricing rules that actually get followed
Service throughput, capacity and warranty recovery  ·  Purchasing, vendor programs and receiving

Administration

The back office treated as a system rather than a filing exercise. Ordinary right up until the month you cannot explain, or the audit you cannot answer.

Cash management  ·  Chart of accounts and posting integrity
Approval authority and segregation of duties  ·  Month-end

Executive

Across all three at once, and one step further out: how much of this business runs because of one particular person, and what it would take for that to be less true. That question comes due when the business changes hands — preparing to sell or pass it on →

Owner dependency  ·  Accountability, and numbers people are actually held to
Knowledge that does not leave when someone does
How it works

Built around your operation, not a template

We start with how the business runs — then make the numbers, the systems and the processes support it better.

1

Understand

We learn the operation, the systems, and where the friction and the risk live today.

2

Diagnose

We put a number on what is happening and separate the causes from the symptoms.

3

Improve

We make practical changes that fit your team and the tools you already have, in a sequence you can absorb.

4

Sustain

We measure whether it held, month over month, and hand the practice to your team rather than keeping it.

Most work starts with an assessment

Before anything gets changed, we agree what we are looking at, review your reporting and how the work runs, and come back with findings and a plan. It is deliberately light on your team’s time — access to the relevant reports and a few focused conversations with the people who run each area. Plenty of businesses stop there and run the plan themselves.

A prioritized action plan

A ranked list of what to fix first, ordered by what it is worth rather than by how loud it is.

Opportunity sizing

Where money, time and capacity are being lost, with numbers attached wherever your data actually supports a number.

How the areas affect each other

The counter, the back office, service and inventory pulling on one another — usually where the cause turns out to live, rather than where the symptom showed up.

A summary you can hand over

Written so you can give it to a partner, a lender or your management team without translating it first.

A sequence you can absorb

Concrete next steps in an order the business can actually take on, rather than everything at once in January.

No obligation to continue

The assessment stands on its own. Carrying on into consulting or training is an option afterwards, not the point of the exercise.

Three ways to work together

Project-based

A defined project to solve a specific problem or roll out a change, with an agreed scope and a clear end.

Advisory retainer

Ongoing access to guidance and a regular review that keeps momentum between the bigger pieces of work.

Embedded support

Working alongside your team through a critical implementation or transition, for as long as that takes.

Scope and price are confirmed in writing before any work begins. There is no obligation to proceed after a conversation.

Consulting stands on its own

You do not need the software to work with us, and you do not need us to use the software. Where they do run together, each one makes the other faster: Vista shortens the diagnosis, and the advisory work reaches the parts of the operation no application can see.

Vista Intelligence

Applications that read the data you already have and rank what is worth doing. Often the quickest way to find out where the work should start.

Training

Education for the people who run the operation, so what changes keeps running after we are gone.

Common questions

Do we have to switch systems or buy new software?
No. ProfitEdge is independent and vendor-neutral. We work inside the systems you already run, and we do not take commissions from anyone who sells them.
Do we have to use Vista Intelligence?
No. Consulting stands on its own. Some projects use Vista because reading your own data is the fastest route to a diagnosis; plenty do not use it at all.
How is consulting priced?
The work is scoped to your situation. We agree the scope and the price in writing before any work begins, and there is no obligation to proceed after a first conversation.
How quickly will we see something change?
Most projects produce something you can act on inside the first phase. Whether it holds is a different question, which is why measurement and handover are part of the work rather than an add-on.
Can consulting be combined with training?
Yes, and it usually should be. Training is how the change survives after we leave.

Tell us where it is going wrong.

Twenty minutes on your operation is usually enough to say whether we can help, and where we would start.
